Spatial design Sencity festival 2023

For 20 years, Sencity Festival has been introducing (hearing-impaired and deaf) people to music in a new, sensory-rich way.

The festival exists 20 years and especially for this festive occasion we (Studio Ruwedata & Co2RO) realize a scenography full of optical illusions!

The theme ‘Faalvreugde’/ ‘Failure joy’ stands within the scenography of Sencity 2023 taking people out of the moment but also getting them back into the moment through collaboration. As a metaphor for the joy of failure, we use the imagery of a graphic an optical interplay of lines. A place where you can get lost, a place where nobody knows the right way or exit. No right or wrong, just experiencing and experiencing a maze of light, and graphic images that make you feel at ease but also put you in a party mood and let it all go.

We’ve made 3 installations:

Lenticulair screens
6 huge mobile (on wheels) screens of 200 cm high and various widths using the lenticular technique. On each screen are typographic texts (front and back, a total of 4 sides) that strike the theme ‘Faalvreugde’. The text can be read from 2 different viewpoints and if you stand right in front of it it becomes a beautiful abstract composition. Because they are several screens, those texts can be changed by the visitors by moving the screens. With this, short phrases and slogans can be made up, so interactive!

Kaleidoscope
A huge kaleidoscope of 2 meters long to encouraging the audience to work together. The user can choose from 2 “slides” designed by Studio Ruwedata and executed in acrylic. An insane graphic/optical interplay of lines emerges. A place where you can get lost, a place where nobody knows the right way or exit. Taking people out of the moment but also getting them back into the moment through collaboration.

Analog projections
Co2RO works with analog beamers into which rotating large-screen slides from its own laboratory and new ones developed by Studio Ruwedata are placed. Projected images crawl along, in and with each other, creating interfering patterns and abstract narratives. A projection is a “liveset” of rotating and still images and light. The search for the image within the given architectural profile is a performance on object, floor, ceiling and wall. The complete festival is reconnected to each other through Co2RO’s analog projections. Object, light and reflection together build a new spatial experience. A space that in its layering is experienced as an optical illusion.
